Stable process monitoring - waste water treatment in Kocaeli, Turkey
In 2025, the Kocaeli Water and Wastewater Administration (ISU) implemented a new monitoring system for the continuous measurement of key waste water parameters in municipal and industrial treatment plants. The goal was to improve process control, operational efficiency, and compliance with environmental standards.
The local TriOS partner IC Endustri delivered and commissioned ten monitoring stations, each equipped with TriOS sensors:
- LISA UV (SAC254)
- pH sensor
- Conductivity sensor
- Dissolved oxygen sensor
The installation was carried out in a bypass configuration within measurement stations, allowing for easy maintenance and protecting the equipment.
The stations are located at five municipal and nine industrial sites in the Kocaeli region. The municipal plants have capacities between 50,000 – 150,000 m³ per day, while the industrial plants range from 2,000 – 5,000 m³ per day. Parameter measurements are carried out at the effluent of each plant—before the municipal facilities discharge into various water bodies while the industrial facilities discharge into the regional sewer system.
The variable composition of industrial waste water—for example from the paper, chemical, and automotive industries—poses a particular challenge, especially for COD measurement.
With the TriOS measuring devices, monitoring can be carried out online and automatically. If limit values are exceeded for more than 15 minutes, a sample is taken automatically and the Ministry of Environment is notified. The data are used to ensure compliance with legal requirements and can trigger penalities in case of violations.
Results and Benefits
The use of TriOS sensors in the monitoring stations enables:
- a stable and precise process monitoring,
- optimized operational decisions through real-time data,
- low and simplified maintenance thanks to the bypass installation,
- sustainability through the long service life of the measuring instruments and the absence of reagents,
- and reliable compliance with environmental regulations
